been going absolutely bonkers with orders lately. of course, it's fantastic. i tell ya, 2012 has a different feeling. something's very right. love it!

i do love baking. today was 1 single order of 80 cookies! sweet! i like it how things are progressing, getting easier every time to get set up and bake.
other than that, going through every nook in my house and checking if it's something to keep, store, put away in the right place, donate... feels great clearing up space for new things. i like it when personal conceptual ideas match actual moments in "real" life. so mental cleaning (i'm not trying to be vague, i swear!), trying to get rid of old ideas, patterns that don't work etc is also making space for learning new concepts and letting fresh things/people/conversations/rhythms in. really good.

got these amazing flower teas for my birthday. i'm not sure what the best part is: the ritual, the anxiety of the flower opening only 4 or 5 mins after the water's in, being obsessive about photographing it or drinking it. seriously.

also just realized something so evident. if this is all a one man band and i'm the one man, then why not incorporate everything i know in the same package? from ribbons to stamps to watercolor to drawing to handwriting to baking... this is all making so much sense!
aslo, talking to a friend about how to start i realized i said: do it for pleasure, at least, that's what i'm focused on. very true. doing this whole thing because i want to, because it brings me joy, because i can come up with creative new ideas... this is the entire point of it. again: loving it!

sometimes, photographs seem better than the trip itself, isn’t that true? imagine if it was a video! this one, made and directed by christian andersen leaves us in a dreamstate mood, like a memory. the aesthetic is beautiful, the music is good and i question whether it’s a good or a bad thing that it’s so short. at the end of it all, what gives us good results, takes us away from reality and transforms it into something so playful is that we only see the essence of a variety of moments. andersen makes a beautiful synthesis of a visit to nyc. i wonder then, will i ever be able to summarize my memories in such a beautiful or poetic format as his? it’s worth a try.

also always good to refresh & learn new skills. taking a cupcake 2 day worskhop at ceg with chef lucas corazza. definitely fun to learn new ways of decorating and yes... practice makes perfect, one day... hahaha...
also talking about cooking classes and the demonstration ones versus the ones where you actually cook/bake things yourself and learn. i'm learning a bit in the cupcake workshop although if we went a tad slower, i'd probably take in much more. i need to write things down as i hear them, can't multitask when new things are coming in. oh well... at least you can tell by the pic above that i'm learning something about decorating definitely. (although not quite sure how to make this specific frosting, as i was doing the dishes, and it's soooooooo good). hahaha....

got an order for 30 cupcakes for saturday (30th birthday) and am excited about making'em. trying out a new flavor for me, we'll see how it goes.

sentimental post but worth it. for me at least. for writing it.

i can say that after 2002, so... 9 yrs, i've been living life in automatic mode. in trauma and scared-of-life mode. a bit on the grey and negative side of things, with yes, spurts of happiness now and then. not depressed at all, but sad and angry. negative, pessimistic, irritated, annoyed...
cancer's a big hit and i guess, like when you snap your back out of place, you need to snap it back in. well, recently, turns and risks and jobs and what-have-yous, for some reason, something clicked. or snapped. that's what it felt like and i believe we can only see the grey clouds in hindsight. god, i love hindsight, although ironically, yes, i wish we could see things clearly in the middle of the hurricane as well. but i get it, we're human and we can only deal with what we can handle.
so i'm slow. it took me 9 years to release things. letting go is a huge part of overcoming and i went through all i did and now, i can finally, and recently, say that i have faith in life again. the feeling's been tip toeing towards me for a while but i can feel the change. it's like i see things more clearly. more colors. i'm confident in life again. confident that things WILL BE fine no matter what happens. more in tune and concerned with the PRESENT. making choices in order to be happy. focusing on the PROCESS and realizing that results will be results, such as boys will be boys, like gloria estefan always said. i've been LAUGHING and smiling and talking/writing more freely. nonsensical even because that's just how i think, how the synapses in there connect. i feel like i'm back into being an artist mode.
i do believe it has to do with things that pushed me to make a few changes in my life but instead of feeling like i have no floor underneath my feet, it feels i can actually hang in there fine, midair. i'm so happy to be my old self, before cancer, before a big breakup, before i lost faith, for lack of a better word, that something good was reserved for me somewhere out there. i hope this newfound confidence in life stays. and like one of the finest words ever, if something disrupts things again, because life has its bumps and we know it, may i have the resilience to come back up faster, more positive, lighter.

did some research on how to make a great business a complete success, heard some good lectures, read some good material. handed in some writings for this week's ezine, b-coolt. and other than some other things (probable new clients & business cards and stickers at the graphic shop where they'll print'em), started laying down the foundation. aka, excel with all costs and price research in the neighborhood for each and every item. even excel spreadsheets are looking exciting.
okay, not as exciting as the brownie i'm about to bake!

so being happy became a priority and after 2 months of learning about innovation, therefore taking risks and making friends with uncertainty, i took a big risk myself. i quit my regular job and yes, i'm gonna take another step in the baking business. i'm excited!!!
first, to name the shop and decide whether it's virtual with deliveries (which is what i've already been doing) or a cafe with the whole 9 yards. hm...
to name the shop, watch for open innovation on facebook. i'm going to launch sort of like a battle of concepts and ask people for suggestions. the best and the most voted on, both, get a batch of cupcakes as a prize. and i'll get a name for the shop. as the new museum in nyc says, "hell yes!".

(we want miles!) opens on october 20th and on the same day, as if it wasn't enough to see 300 pieces, among them original scores, manuscripts and his trumpet collection, there's the concert by the symphonic jazz orchestra. one thing complements the other. the concert is one night only, but the exhibition is open through january 25, 2012! there's time to come and go, enjoy and come back, search the subtleties and sophistication and learn things, perhaps, beyond jazz...

picture taken at work today. and yea, for the fun of it, i'd like to add that i work in a good ole regular bank. so i'm at the INNOVATION dept and by that, it means i have to start an education program and culture for people (employees) to think differently. and yes, i was hired as the artist that i am.

so i invited prize winning and amazing chef henrique fogaça (link to his restaurant, sal gastronomia. yes, the name of the restaurant is "salt") to come cook for us next week at this Innovation Week we're doing. he came for the training of all the chefs this afternoon, hence, picture above. to give you an idea, one of the restaurants serves something between 2000 and 3000 people every day. and that's one of 3 restaurants. whoa.
fun to have an eventful week. fun to ask the main pastry chef if i could drop in and hang out, pick up a few tricks with him. fun that he said yes. fun that i get to eat really well next week, after having tried henrique's menu today. wow... so good.

Em São Paulo, isso só costuma dizer que o café da manhã se estende em um horário quase pós almoço, mas é o suficiente porque o buffet é completamente irresistível. Pain et Chocolat é uma doceria em Moema que oferece, nos finais de semana, frutas picadas, sucos naturais, ovos mexidos, pães, bolos, cookies, além do básico, café, leite, pão, manteiga... E claro, depois de tudo isso, ainda tem as vitrines com doces para babarmos e pedirmos. A vontade é de passar o domingo todo lá ou pelo menos, todos os domingos!

first step: confessing that we all have lazy sundays. sometimes we want to wake up late, guilt free, start the day slowly and then, after all that, eat well. nothing better than the combo of breakfast and lunch, the well known brunch. in são paulo, that usually means that breakfast extends till an almost post lunch hour but it's enough because the buffet is absolutely irresistible. pain et chocolat is a pastry shop in moema that offers, on weekends, chopped fruit, natural juices, scrambled eggs, breads, cakes, cookies other than the basic coffee, milk, bread, butter... and of course, after all that there's still the pastry glass windows for us to drool over and order. what we really want is to spend all sunday there or at least, every sunday!

so there's this extremely good exhibition coming up, starting september 30th. and they brought jeff koons to speak at the auditorium as a preview. oh yay - just confirmed my spot! sweeeeeet.

how can a shell made out of wood with strings attached to it have such personality?
while they were all playing, i could pick out one violin player with a scratchy eye and the sniffles that day. i smiled. i like individuality. he shows a new (very human?) perspective for me. different light.

so comfortable with the violin, he literally places, feels, shows it as an extension of his body.
you can tell when his violin takes a breath.

2 floors of chocolate chip cookies. this time, great idea: the cookie dough is in the fridge and as opposed to baking the full batch, i'm only baking as necessary. so in goes a tiny batch of 5 cookies. later on, when friends come over, a batch of 12 cookies. and so on...
it can stay up to 5 days in the fridge, i believe. so every time, i get super freshly baked cookies.

DEFINITELY a must go: louise bourgeois at instituto tomie ohtake (for those of you in são paulo).

i had never seen so many of her works together and after going to the exhibition, i cannot explain how evidently important and universal her artwork is. (understatement of the year) bourgeois seems to effortlessly translate universal feelings into any sort of art form, be it a drawing, painting, sculpture, installation... i am not usually emotionally touched just by looking at something but as i was progressing into the show and immediately after running into the sculpture pictured here on the post, my eyes starting welling up. the cloth looks so humanlike and somehow, it's more poignant than anything i've ever seen, despite, of course, seeing various points of view on the same subject matter. hitting the nail on the head does not begin to describe the accuracy of louise bourgeois' work. the most intimate and natural expressions exposed, yet done so completely harmlessly. it seems somehow more natural for her to be human than for any other person. an extremely gratifying exhibition to see, a naked truth that is somehow comfortable. i apologize for the overuse of the word "somehow" but there is a certain way she does that is different than everyone else's and that is what's right about her work. she has a "somehow" that no one else does.

completely in awe. definitely will go again and sit, stare, contemplate, look, draw, ... i feel like there's a chance that time actually stops when we're looking at louise bourgeois.

oh my. i was never such a strong believer in something as i am now in the consecutive fast progression of doors opening. as we live through life's experiences, we connect things here and there. feelings with facts. in doing that, of course, we sometimes misconnect things as well. as soon as we start untying those knots, it's incredible how much life becomes easier.
understatement of the year but i can say, from the bottom of my heart, that life is so much fun when you live without your fears!!!
the minute i chose to try to look at a fear here and there, i took half a step inside. after i was comfortable, i took action. from that action, i re-connected and figured out that results are positive and there's nothing to be afraid of. sorry for all this abstract talk but it's making so much sense to me!
the minute i realized it was positive to open a door, even my subconscious has been opening doors left and right! new this, new that, new those, new them, new everything!! wow. i'm completely in awe and shock with my mouth gaping open and at the same time, smiling.
possibilites ... opportunities ... outlooks ... chances ... perhaps ... everywhere. amazing.

true though. a year ago my mom couldn't really sew so her solution was to simply buy a sewing machine and figure it out. now, not only is she understanding and practically writing tutorials but also, customizing and creating things. the outcomes look beautiful. i'm so happy and it gives me a green light on whatever i want to do as well. it's not even about "not wasting time" or "enjoying life" or any silly superficial cliche. it's just really, almost nike-like, just do it. love it! go mom!

very worth sharing: Ryan A.. work that's good in black - grey - white is real good. i always remember a friend of mine who used to do graphic design before computer screens were in color and he always said that, it has to be good in greyscale for it to be really good design. some people use colors as crutches and don't understand the value of different tones, as opposed to different hues. very important. this ryan a person is amazing.
and i love the stories as well.

disclosure, before i write anything: this is not an attempt to be any sort of critique in any way, shape or form. these are just my ramblings i jotted down as i was there, at the opening of alex cerveny at the gallery i really like and feel at home in, casa triângulo.

alex cerveny's work expresses so much using so little. it's spiritual, yet i feel it comes from the earth. the artist uses symbolism that we're used to, but in a way we're not used to seeing. he has unexpected elements but makes us feel at home with them. he opens up the idea that being human may also be like being an animal. i feel like his works are so free that they allow me to be whoever or whatever i am. it feels like he has good instincts and follows them.
they're unique. his work is lighter than watercolor. he has a very nostalgic color palette, a good balance between painting and drawing. there are well picked words, when he uses text. i love the borders.
his paintings/drawings have something that remind me of leonilson. memories, stories and fables. leaving, i felt like i had read a whole collection worth of books.
i already liked his work before, and now i like it even more.

wishing brazil was a more craft oriented country. we'd have art and craft fairs like finders keepers in australia, national stationery show in the US, and even the etsy website.
i wonder how much of culture and history play a role in why we don't focus on crafts, despite this being an extremely hand crafty culture. maybe that's why... being a hand crafter is matter of surviving in some places in brazil. weaving baskets is not a form of hobby-taken-seriously-artistry, but a way of making money. maybe it's such a basic necessity that it tends to larger masses. there's a different quality to it. but that might be why the appeal to the tourists is so big. handmade things in brazil are key. but in a different light. definitely interesting culturally...

crazy how in 3 years of blogging culture has sped up. i must say that i get the feeling that blogging is "old" and that i should be twitter-ing and tumblr-ing. i've been trying to find out the real difference between blogspot and tumblr and basically, i do get it that it's more customizable but also that in blogs we write. (i sound like "in god we trust") i'm sad to see that reading is old fashioned, and more and more i do admit that i am sounding like an old geezer already. (and i am only 32 yrs old)

i'll admit i even considered closing the blog as there hasn't been too many interactions and not a big increase of followers recently but for some reason, what i really feel like doing, and that is my usual trend, to do what i want regardless of what the new fad is, i'll keep blogging. i'll allow myself to be briefer (if that's a word) and i'll write the way i actually wanna write, no filters because "oh, this is public." the best and most valuable line ever from the best writer ever, "this above all to thine own self be true". (thanks polonius!) so there it is. sometimes less writing, more images, more updates. we'll see how this goes. or as far as i know, i'll see how this goes. i'll make it more interesting, even for myself.

i'll remain true to the original idea so i'll still keep this as a personal want and not a commercial blog and not have its sudden main goal be to get as many followers as i can. i will confess though, as many people might wonder as they do this themselves, why do i blog?
